Devon Regatta, vertical gardening Aug. 29 - Sept 1, 2014

August 29.  For breakfast, B had kedgeree, made from rice, fish,curry powder, et al.   Not bad.

 We stopped at Bicton Garden.  It has England’s oldest greenhouse, 1836, with 18,000 small glass panels.

There was a museum with historic agricultural tools and vehicles.  Most interesting item, B thought, was this Victorian display of varieties of meadow grasses.

We returned to Dartmouth by about 4 to catch the aerial displays of the Royal Dartmouth Regatta.  The Leighs’ deck is the perfect place to watch.   The Typhoon, manufactured by a consortium of EU companies, is extremely loud:

And the Red Arrows:

The Regatta continued Saturday with sporadic demonstrations of military aircraft and a dull procession of small “classic” boats.  It ended in the evening with splendid fireworks.

Aug 30  Vertical gardening.

The Leighs live on a ridge above Dartmouth, last house on the left.

Street signs passed on the way up;

.  The garden goes steeply downhill 70+ steps.

Bruce was permitted to attend to the garden, deadheading roses and removing ivy.  Hiding in the compost bin are a few well-camouflaged slow worms, small legless lizards.

August 31, Sunday.

We took the boat out to a nearby cove for a picnic.  There were some horses on the beach.

Sept. 1.  We rest.
